Open Letter To The City Council Dated July 11, 2022:
We represent the property owners of Sand Town which includes areas South of Springhill Avenue, namely Sheips Lane, Mordecai Lane along McGregor Avenue, and North of Springhill Avenue. Despite certain voices that continue to try and relegate Sand Town to just the North side of Springhill Avenue, Sand Town is all of that area.
With the UDC vote upcoming on Tuesday, July 12th, we are once again requesting a Safe Zone and protections form commercial encroachment and development as we have many times before. Please hear our concerns.
We are in District 7, and we have been asking for these protections from our representative and we have not been heard. Our representative has not reached out to us to provide protections despite multiple attempts to communicate our concerns over impending commercial development.
Just as Africa Town has a Safe Zone in the UDC, why haven’t we received Safe Zones and protections from commercial encroachment? We don’t feel safe in our own neighborhood, and we need protection.
Just as Africa Town is relevant historically to the City of Mobile and the greater United States; we at Sand Town yield significant historic value to the City of Mobile and United States. We don’t feel safe in our own neighborhood, and we need protection.
The Village of Spring Hill Overlay does not provide us with such protections; quite the contrary. Please vote no until such protections and a Safe Zone for Sand Town can be provided within the UDC.
Sincerely,
Sand Town Community Action Group
